Calculated Backsight points

Postby Iain Shiells » Thu Jun 22, 2006 7:59 pm

I'm running an Alegro CE with SurvCE on a Topcon GPT-3005W. Everytime I
start a new job where I'll make a new point and give it a false northing
and easting (ie. N:10000 E:10000, EL: 100) and backsight to an unknown
point, it prompts me to use azimuth or enter coordinates. Obviously I
don't have the coords, so I use azimuth. So then it supposedly calculates
my point, and stores it, and its all fine and dandy on the data collector,
but when it comes to post processing and I import the raw data file into
Trimble Geomatics Office, my backsight point comes in with no data at all,
no elev, no northing, no easting. Is there a setting i'm missing in
SurvCE? Or is it something to do with the post processing program I am
using?

We work around this by creating an assumed point at 10000,10000,100, then
using the Point in Direction command to create another. That is, we take a
bearing manually, use the instrument to shoot a distance manually, input all
the data into SurvCE and store a second point. This is then used as a
backsight point. Your raw data should show two points being created, then
one being occupied with the other backsighted. It is fairly simple overall
and saves confusion in postprocessing software. By the way we use the same
DC package with either Leica or Topcon intruments but we use Carlson Survey
2006 for our processing. Hope it works for you.

When entering an Azimuth and using "Set Angle" on the back-sight no point
is stored.
When entering an Azimuth to an unknown point and using "Set Angle and
Distance" ,then
the back-sight point it is assigned coordinates.
