WARNING re:space-delimited ASCII files in 2.03

Postby Steve Owens » Fri Jan 25, 2008 5:07 pm

If you use space-delimited ASCII files to upload in SurvCE 2.03, you now cannot have multiple spaces separating the fields.

For some bizarre "reason", you must now have ONLY single spaces as delimiters. If you do NOT, you will get a corrupt file in your data collector.

sigh....

Forgot to mention that the Preview data is correctly formatted, but the actual conversion does not work.

This is in regards to using File / Import Ascii with Ascii Text files
using Multiple Spaces in the delimiter
PLEASE NOTE: This does not affect "Single Space" delimiter files
or "Comma" delimited files. It's on the high priority list, but has not yet been fixed. The report was filed on Jan 28.we did have a "known issues" spot on the knowledge base at one point. we will give consideration as to resurrect it?

Dave -

Thanks for posting that.

It certainly makes me at least breathe better knowing that Carson is aware of and willing to deal with this problem.

I think a "Known Issues" category would be perfect. It would allow Carlson to tell users if they think a reported problem is, in fact, a problem, and would at least alert users, who could then see if the problem affects them.

Steve,

When you first made this post, I called John Gerber and discussed this issue with him and he told me that he had emailed you and had documented the problem and had reported it to programmers and they were going to repair. Here is the original email from John:

The way I read that, we are aware of the problem and are willing to deal with it. I left your warning post so if there were any other users using this method, they would also be aware.

Right.

I just wanted to make SURE that other users were aware of the potential problem.
