Taking bogus shots inside the data buffer

Postby delliottg » Mon Mar 10, 2008 3:36 pm

We've run into a vexing problem with our Sokkia SRX where we can shoot and collect points inside the data buffer (for lack of a better term) after walking to the next point.

What this means is, the crew takes a shot and starts walking towards his next shot while entering a note. With the instrument in tracking mode, the "pie" on the screen begins to follow him to the next point, but lags behind. He gets to his next point, hits enter to finish the note, and can then take as many "ghost" shots as he wants while watching the "pie" catch up with him by using the "S" icon to shoot. The shots fall where the "pie" is displayed, not where he is. If instead he uses the enter button, the shot that's taken is real, not somewhere in the data buffer.

Obviously this has terrifying implications, and the only way we discovered it was while checking as-built information on stuff we'd already shot and they weren't lining up. How much other information is simply wrong?

To reproduce this:
Instrument: Sokkia SRX robotic
Data Collector: Allegro CX
SurvCE version: 2.02
Rod connected to data collector via Bluetooth
Rod connected to instrument via radio.
Data collector set to store then read
Prompt for notes is turned on
FCL is loaded
DXF of project is loaded.
Instrument is in tracking mode

Take a shot using map screen using "S" to shoot.
Walk a distance from the first shot while entering a note.
Press enter to finish the note,
notice that "pie" is still moving along the track you walked.
Press "S" to shoot as many points along your track as you want until the "pie" catches up to where you are.

Obviously this isn't how we discovered this, it's just the simplest way to reproduce it.

Workaround: Use the enter key to shoot instead of the "S" icon.

This is very bad, we've been using this gun for months and just discovered this. How many of our projects have bogus data in them?

SurvCE 2.0 / Shots in Buffer

You should be able to update to the newest version of SurvCE 2.04 being released in March.

This version has been tested with a Sokkia SRX Robot with storing points as your writing notes and they did not see the issue you described.

This appears to be fixed with 2.04, but now there's a different problem. Please see my next post regarding N/A during Set & Read.
