Map check by screen entities?

Can anyone explain how this works with curve data? Help menu just says to pick the labels. when I do I got an error to check deed settings. I changed my prefix to match what I have in my curve labels but still is sort of funky. I can get it to work by messing with the order in which I pick labels & where I select the figure but I'm not sure what's making it work. Can't find a more detailed description of the command in help & it works fairly predictably if I don't have a curve.
