Road Design

Postby Jason Bly » Wed May 21, 2003 12:25 am

I've figured most of the procedures in designing a road, including
templates, profile design and section files, but I can't seem to figure out
what to do with intersecting street designs. I assume I will just have to
hand fix those, but I thought I would post to see how everyone else handles
them.

That is, how to get the program to contour proposed grades at intersections.

Jason:

Excellent question. While the final grading of a road intersection does
require some hand editting to massage the final surface model, I allow the
computer to do as much of the design as possible. I assume that you are
warping the PGL to get the grades for the secondary road to match the grades
of the primary road. I use a Template Point Profile in my design to model
this warping. The downside to this solution is that you have to use the
Template Point Profile for the entire length of your design, but, except for
the last 50 feet or so, this profile should be a copy of your main PGL
profile. The hand editting comes into play because this design will not
include the fillet at the intersection so you will have to manually add the
vertical geometry for the fillet itself. Hope that helps.

On the same subject, I know that Eagle Point in the last few years
introduced an intersection design module that is supposed to compute the
road intersections, include an analysis routine to prevent the birdbaths
that can occur in a bad design. When we made the switch from EP to SurvCADD
it was indicated that Carlson was looking (???) or working (???) on a
similar command. Any word on that from the Carlson folks that read these
messages?

I don't usually use templates for the roads. I use "profile to 3d polyline"
for the centerline. Then, I use 3d offsets for the edge of pave, curbs,
sidewalk.
If necessary, I use "design pad template" to solve a catch line to existing.

At the intersection, I copy the 2d curve return to the 3d layer. If flow
will make it all the way around the curve, I use 2d to 3d polyline by
start-end elevation. If there is a high or low necessary in the curve, I
break it at the middle, and then use 2d to 3d polyline by start-end
elevation. I check slopes to centerline from various directions with 3DIST.

3d offset some more for any other curb and sidewalk.

After solving the DTM, I usually check grading over with a bunch of Runoff
Tracking to see if I missed something.
