Ron Sawyer (aka. Mr. StarNet) has recently made my survey data management a much more productive & enjoyable experience.
He has enabled his StarTDS stand alone conversion routine to deal with Traverse & Sideshot data in Carlson .rw5 files created by the COGO Module - it's not perfect,
but given the fact that previously it did not work at all & the differences between a Carlson COGO created .rw5 vs. a TDS file, I'm impressed.
It still requires inserting a Mode header line at the top of each file as follows:
MO,AD0,UN0,SF1.0000000000,EC0,EO0.0
For some traverse data where you have BD-FD-FR-BR, or I suppose BD-FD-BR-FR, the BS,BC data is omitted if there has been a previous setup with the same
backsite there, as for example in the following line:
BK,OP106,BP6
You need to add the following to complete the line:
,BS,BC0.0000
Then the data line would be correct, as follows:
BK,OP106,BP6,BS,BC0.0000
It runs great then.
I wrote a couple of VB Macros to hand edit/paste in these 2 as needed in MS Word & I'm one happy camper now.
How many StarNet / Carlson users are there I wonder?
I started using StarNet in 1995 for SPC jobs only.
I use it for virtually everything now - the more I use it the more new uses I find & Ron keeps making it easier to use, while adding new features.
He's added full StarLev abilities for my Pro version, updated the manual, & upgraded my StarTDS for free, & these minor upgrades are free for all users - not bad, huh?
And where else except Carlson can I pick up the phone & get real time customer support (solutions) for my problems.
Hey, here's a tip, especially for the new users of StarNet.
I love paper, reading it that is, vs. the online help files & I'll steal every second I can get away from the computer screen, as long as I can be productive.
Somehow I've never had room around the desktop clutter & keyboard for the large 3-ring binder Ron distributes.
I have Kinkos scale the .pdf down to the size of my other software manuals, seperate each of the manuals with a bright yellow card-stock, & bind it with a spiral for
under $35.
It takes up no room, you'll use it more, & learn new uses.
