Civil 3D feature lines

Postby drwilson » Tue Jun 28, 2011 2:35 pm

1st post here. We are evaluating Carlson for our survey division. We have been using Civil 3D. We do construction stake out from Civil 3D drawings. The feature lines in C3D allow for 3D curves. I have yet to find a way to bring them into AutoCAD as anything but teselated 3D polylines. We need to stake radius. I can flatten them to a constant elevation in Civil 3D and they explode to 2D poly with radius but it's a one entity at a time operation.

I tried to download the 2011 object enabler but it wasn't able to find my embedded Carlosn/AutoCAD 2011. This may be because it's embedded, or maybe because it's a trial version or because I've had C3D 2011 installed (I did uninstall).

But has anyone used 2011 Carlson w/AutoCAD & Civil 3D OE? Can you work with Feature line objects?

Thanks, looking forward to working with Carlson but I'm trying to work some of these details out before we committ since our engineers will remain on Civil 3D for the forseeable future.

Did you try to install the 2010 object enabler. The following is a link to the object enabler that Carlson instructs to use with the 2011 Carlson Embedded.

Thanks, odd that the 2010 OE works over the 2011 on 2011 but it does. Unfortunately I can't see the feature line though.

This may be a stupid questions but have you done a saveas from Civil 3D or a file export? This makes a big difference as Carlson will not be able to read the dynamic features in C3D unless its exported to an earlier version.

Yes I have. In both instances it essentially explodes the feature line. So if it has elevations on it, you loose the radius of the curve because it tesselates a 3D polyline & you can use the elevation editor to set a constant elevation & then it keeps the radius but looses the elevations. I could live without the elevations for just staking out radius but you can't batch convert the feature lines in Civil 3D. You have to pick them one at a time to zero out the elevations. I've found some 3rd party software that will do it but I was hoping to find an easier way.

Would I be correct to assume that these 3D feature lines that you are staking are part of a proposed ground surface? If that is the case exporting a LandXML and importing the same into Carlson would probably do the trick.

some are & some are not. I will give that a try though. When importing surface Land XML in C3D, I just get the TIN & not actual entities that generate it. I assumed this would be the same with Carlson but maybe not.
