Real Z Value

Is there a way to re-associate points with real z value without running them through f2f ? When I bring points back in through defaults I lose my layers and symbols.

Youi have to break the link between the points and your blocks. IF you are on 2017, go to "Points", down to "Draw locate points", look to the lower left of that window and you will see a selector window that has as an option "Allow duplicates". Set it to that. That should fix your problem.

IF you are on 2016 or earlier, you run FF with points, symbols and line work selected. Then erase points and tell it not to erase points from the crd file, but you DO want to erase symbols. That gets rid of the annoying x or whatever you mark your nodes with. It also gets rid of all of your blocks. So now, rerun F2F with ONLY the symbol button selected. The blocks come back in and the link to the points is gone, so they should not disappear again in the future.
