I have elevation contours in *.shp (and all the other files associated with it) in addition to the *.mdb file (now) but when I try to import it, I am told to go to my GIS settings and change them. Apparently, there is a template" required in order to do so????

You need to use gis database settings and set a template database. This can be a new empty file but does have to be set to import a shape file.
