That is by design. Settings related to the current drawing are stored in
that block, so it is updated each time you save.

Actually Jon, that toggle is not supposed to have an effect on whether
of not SURVSETV is created when you save. On my machine, it looks like
if it is *unchecked*, it does NOT create the SURVSETV block. The block
should be created anytime you save the drawing. We are checking into
this potential problem this afternoon.

Anyway, the SURVSETV block is a block of attributes that stores settings
related to the drawing, such as horiz scale, etc. See the attached
graphic for a text view of this block.

No, the block is only written when you save or when you make a change to

I've mentioned a while back that this block doesn't always get saved.
Sometimes you will need to save a second time until you get the
message......Redefining block "SURVSETV". I believe it does not save it
on
the first save attempt after opening, but I'm not sure.

what is the point of saving this block every single time you save the
same
drawing? if the variables are set in the drawing do they not stay that
way?
or do things with survcad change these variables and do not change them
back?

if i open and edit a drawing in the core acad, it does not change
anything
and i can go my merry way.. why do things change from one setting to
another
and then do not go back to the way they were. take label contours for
example, the program works good (if there are no 0 length poly line
segments) but you need to reset the osnaps after each use.

maybe the programmers should look into this for next builds... things
have
changed enough to maybe go thru all of the codes and lisps to see if the
most efficient AutoCAD features are being used. like i said before, i
know
it takes huge amounts of time, trial and error to create a program like
this.. i have a hard time creating Flash files..

i personally, do not want to create a harddisk cluttering ini file with
every save, i don't create bak files either. give us the option to
create
this survset block or not. i choose not to create this block.

or do things with survcad change these variables and do not change

The point is that if you change certain "SurvCADD" settings (an example
of
some were mentioned in my previous post), the next time you open that
drawing, those settings can be retrieved and 'remembered'. I think you
may
be confusing what is stored in SURVSETV with regular AutoCAD system
variables.

if i open and edit a drawing in the core acad, it does not change
anything
and i can go my merry way.. why do things change from one setting to
another
and then do not go back to the way they were. take label contours for

This is a different issue. You are talking about a routine changing an
AutoCAD system variable and not changing it back. I will look into the
one
you mentioned.

i personally, do not want to create a harddisk cluttering ini file
with
every save, i don't create bak files either. give us the option to
create
this survset block or not. i choose not to create this block.

The .INI files are your choice. I wouldn't consider them "harddisk
cluttering", each one contains only a few bytes. By the way, the INI
files
are used to store the name of the last CRD file used with the drawing,
this
way when you open an existing drawing and choose List Points for
example,
you won't get prompted for a CRD file.

I'm afraid that the SURVSETV block will always be there. The issue
discussed
in an earlier post was confirmed to be a bug today and corrected for
future
builds. This means starting with the next build (after the soon to be
posted
09-25 build), every time you save the drawing, no matter what the status
of
the "Save Drawing INI files" setting, the SURVSETV block will be created
(or
modified) to contain the current settings.

I'm mostly ignorant of real Acad programming, but have dabbled in it for
some
minor routines. Is there no way to store these settings in a user
defined
dictionary dictionary? The block method is simple, but seems very
vulnerable.
It's a pain to avoid during purges for example.

Yes, the data could be stored in a drawing dictionary. It is stored in a
block because of historical reasons. SurvCADD goes back to AutoCAD R10
and dictionaries were not around until R13c4 (I think that is the
release).

Anyway, this is something that could be changed in the future, but most
people don't care or even want to know how a drawing "remembers" the
Horiz. Scale, etc., so it's not a top priority.

I get the same problem of the block being purged from the drawing. I
usually
purge everything when I have a job completed. I believe that is how some
of
the variables get reset.
