How do I set a different line type to draw with?

My layer is continuous, but I have a few lines I want to draw with the HIDDEN linetype.

Used to be, I'd use the linetype pulldown to set ANY linetype I want to draw with.
The linetypes are there, but when I pick one, it goes back to BYLAYER


Don't tell me to change them, I know how to do that. Why isn't it holding the linetype I want to draw with?

You must go to:
SETTINGS
LINETYPE MANAGER
pick a linetype and hit CURRENT
This will make that linetype the "current" (override the default)
