If you are using AutoCAD 2008, you need to install AutoDESK raster design object enabler and then when you try to attach an image i believe you get sid images as an option.

The ability to import MrSID files is a new feature of Carlson GIS 2009 and Carlson GIS 2009 can operate with either AutoCAD or IntelliCAD.

Importing MrSid

Postby LadyRPLS » Tue Sep 14, 2010 6:21 pm

When you "imprt" a MrSid file, where is the new image saved? I am not prompted for a location to save the new file at and I do not have write access to the server that the sid images are located on.

Running Carlson 2010 :?:

The MrSID converter will attempt to place the converted image (JPG or TIF) in the same folder in which the SID file resides. If the SID file(s) reside on network server and you don't have create/write permissions to the folder, you'll need to put a copy of the SID image into a folder where you do have permissions (e.g. on your local hard-drive).

From some testing that I've done in the past, it looks like the converter will be able to handle SID images up to about 300MB in size. The following "swell" factors should be consider when converting SIDs:

SID --> JPG: JPG is about 3 times larger than the SID.
SID --> TIF: TIF is about 19 times larger than the SID.

If you try to convert a 300MB SID to JPG, the file size will be close to 1GB and will likely stretch your CPU.

Thanks for the quick response!

Another question:

If you convert to a JPEG, will a world file also be created? I haven't worked with JPEGs much.

Yes, world files (TFW for TIF, JGW for JPG) should get created (presuming of course, the world information is available within or for the SID file).
