Project Points and Elevations to a Polyline

I have a polyline that has two set endpoints. Scattered around the line are a bunch of points that have elevations. Is there an easy way to project the points onto the line so that the line can assume these elevations?

In the Civil module, on the 3D Data menu, 2d to 3d polyline, there is "by points' (or command line: 2dto3dpt).
This routine asks for an offset tolerance, then you select the objects.
Depending on what kind of results you are looking for, another option would be to solve a surface from the points then 2d to 3d the polyline from the surface.
