Layout tab setting bewtween 2 different xrefs

We have a design plan with a base plan xref'd in. It has say 6 different layout tabs (sheets) and each has a specific layer color, on/off configuration.
So now we have a new design file (project) with a different xref but we would like to stick with the same specific layer color, on/off configuration.
I would say to use layer manager but the layer names are different because the XR file names are different..
Again, hopefully it's not that confusing of a question... LOL
