Duplicate points

What is the best way to clean up points that have been located twice on the
screen? They have the same point numbers and may or may not be on the same
layer.

I just go to the /points/erase points/ type "all" and then accept the
default, which does not remove the points from the project. Then just
re-draw the points. I've also found that once you get the file cleaned up,
in XML you can check on "erase duplicates" and you should be set. One word
of advice, with this feature checked, redrawing large point files is
painfully slow. I doesn't matter how big and bad your computer is, the
routine will bring it to its knees....

I have always erased then relocated points, but it seems like there should
be an easier way. Besides, I already have points sorted onto certain layers.
For example, I relocate boundary monuments onto different layers based on if
I hold them for computations (MON-FND-HOLD) or if just found them and their
position is recomputed (MON-FND for the actual monument and MON-FND-COMP
where its plat position is computed). I don't want to have to go back
through and resort those items which I can't control through field to
finish.

Why should I have to erase all points and relocate them when I've already
done the work and just want to clean up the duplicates?

It is a pain... I've tried to use the "erase duplicates" but it's too time
consuming. I feel that the entire draw locate points routine needs a lot of
work. It's just hard to work with on large coordinate files. I tried to
bring in 7500 points into a drawing with the "erase duplicates" turned on,
and the program was importing the points at a rate of 3 per second....
that about 40 minutes? In 40 minutes you could do a lot of point layer
management. On the other hand I agree with you, you should just be able to
remove duplicates, but which one do you remove?

I have encountered the same problem recently. Here is one method if the
following conditions are met:

1) You don't care what the point numbers are, i.e. 234 or 2567.
2) You will need to print a coordinate list and/or plot new point number
sheets
(if you require this)

From the Coordinate File Utilities, Update coord file from drawing. You must
leave "point protect" checked, and all layers in your dwg must on, thawed
and unlocked. type "all" when prompted to pick points from dwg. When the
routine encounters a duplicate point number, it will prompt you for an
answer. It will find the highest unused point in the file to use as a
default for the duplicate, which you should hit "enter" for OK. If this is
unclear, I would suggest you copy your dwg, crd, and ini files to experiment
on. Remember to edit the ini file to point to the new coord (crd) file,
before you open the new dwg. This has worked for me, but everyone's systems
and files are set up differently.

If you only have a few duplicates, I have also gotten a point list (under
the points menu) by selecting points on screen. Again all layers must be
turned on. By going thru the list, I can easily see which point numbers are
duplicated, and I can decide which point numbers I want to use before I
"Edit Point Attributes" on screen, one at a time.

Good luck
